I take care of an 89 y.o. woman whose dad was one of the first homesteaders in Meridian, arriving in 1904. As a child she often heard the following, but can't remember all of the words or the title and would like them.

Sam Jones went out one deep dark night to court Susanna Cree. He fell over a great big log and hurt the cap of his knee.

Now if Jones had stayed to home and hadn't gone courtin' with Miss Cree he wouldn't have fallen over a gret big log and hurt the cap of his knee.

She also remembers that town members would meet at the school house where individuals would recite poems and such, but she can't recall what these meetings were called.

If anyone can help me find any of this information for it, we both would greatly appreciate it.
