Sometime around the early 1920's there were some tunnels built under the town of Ardmore, Oklahoma, according to rumor. These tunnels, stretching from about Caddo St. to about Washington St., connected several businesses, including at least one bank. Supposedly, someone who had been in the tunnels reported seeing blood on the walls. Later, there were walls erected, blocking some of the tunnels. Noone seems inclined to discuss these phenomena; in fact, mention of them brings about a stony silence on the part of Ardmorites. Please, someone, enlighten us! Were they to serve bootleggers, or other law breakers? Can you solve this mystery? IP: Logged |

FASCINATING! I'll be checking back hoping you get a reply with information on this! As a girl from Chicago (with an entire underground city), I am most intrigued!IP: Logged |

Okay, I have lived in Ardmore, OK all my life and my Dad has always talked about the tunnels under the town. From what I understand they were used by bootleggers, and by the way they used to call Ardmore (little Chicago) if you have lived here long enough to hear all the stories. I have not seen the tunnels for myself. but I do know where the entrance was. Just a few years ago they blocked them off because of young children getting down in there. About a year ago or so the Daily Ardmorite did a story in the newspaper about them but only once and nothing has been said since. We have alot of new people here now and alot of them don't even know anything about them. I guess it just depends on what side of town you grow up in. Ardmore is a good town full of alot of local business operators trying to make it. We are proud of the growth that our town has made. I don't know exactly why the tunnels were made to begin with but Ardmore was mainly built because of the Airbase that used to be in Gene Autry and because of the Railroad. The tunnels are located near the Railroad station so, that may have had something to do with it. I will ask my family more details.IP: Logged |

I grew up in a small town in central Oklahoma-there they also have tunnels underground,as a child I was curious so I went down into one(entry was below the remains of an old bank on main street).I got caught there w/in minutes. While under there I saw visible fallout shelter signs along a corridor and other locked doors as well as a room full of old war rations...I was told not to ever go back there or else... quote: Originally posted by butterfly: Okay, I have lived in Ardmore, OK all my life and my Dad has always talked about the tunnels under the town. ive been told the tunnels were used by business men to go from the bank to the bar and not be seen (may have been proabition or something ) underground bar, and i was told the tunnels also went to broadway st. were the knox hotel was located (brathel) i have been told that you could enter the tunnels from the old hudson houston lumber yard but never have seen the entrance personally but makes sense it was located next door to the brathel. there are some people currently renevating some old buildings on the end of main street and they took pictures of the tunnel entrances in the basements to see pics. I don't know the area but it looks to me as if you have got a potential tourist trap there (no pun intended). A ready made adventure ground, if taken over by a trustworthy company making the tunnels safe, would get the adrenalin going for any adventure tourist. With the addition of mystery, which they have, its perfect, especially if you come up in a bar.IP: Logged | |
