I am writing a Civil War novel, and wish to know if my characters, out of Thetford, would have taken a train from White River Junction on the first leg of their journey to Washington City (Washington, D.C) at the outbreak of the Civil War, in April 1861. If so, how far is White River Junction from Thetford? Assuming they would have gone via New York City, how long would the trip from White River Junction to New York City have been? And would they then have taken a ferry to Jersey City, N.J. for the last leg of their trip? Any information you might be able to provide will be greatly appreciated.
